Brown and White to kick off 2010 vs. Akron

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh will remain at home to take on the Akron Zips Saturday at 5:00 p.m. at Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a thrilling 68-66 overtime victory over St. Bonaventure Wednesday night that gave Lehigh its second straight Christmas City Classic title. Junior Erica Prosser earned MVP honors for the tournament for the second year in a row as she averaged 18.0 points and three assists per game while senior Tricia Smith was named to the All-Classic team. The Brown and White defeated Wagner 69-43 in its opening round game of the classic Tuesday night. The Zips are coming into Saturday’s game on a two-game losing streak, but have managed to turn their season around. After starting the season at 2-4, Akron has since gone 4-2.
Senior Kristen Dalton only took one shot against the Bonnies on Wednesday, but it was the most important of the game. With 38 seconds left in overtime, Dalton hit a jumper to put Lehigh up for good.
Prosser is currently sitting at 990 career points and only needs 10 against the Zips to become Lehigh’s 14th player all-time to reach the 1,000 point milestone.
33 of Lehigh’s 68 points against St. Bonaventure came from the free-throw line as it finished the game shooting 73 percent from the line. The 33 made free-throws are a season-high for the Mountain Hawks and the last time it hit that many was February 14, 2009 against Army (33-40 from the line).
Lehigh has had at least three players score in double figures in 10 of its 13 games this season. This includes having five score at least 10 against Villanova on December 5.
Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m. Saturday evening from Stabler Arena. The Lehigh men will play right after the women against NJIT at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available in advance by calling 610-7LU-GAME or online at Lehighsports.com, and on game day at the Stabler Arena box office 60 minutes prior to tipoff.
