Lehigh rowers win five races in impressive showing at Frostbite Regatta

PHILADELPHIA – The Lehigh rowing team posted its strongest performance of the fall on Saturday, winning five races at the Frostbite Regatta on the Schuylkill River. Freshmen and varsity crews for both the women and men won a race on the day. In addition, the Mountain Hawks finished ahead of Patriot League rival Lafayette in every race they competed.
“We had a great day. Every part of the squad got medals,” said head coach Brian Conley. “It was a very, very good day. It's definitely a stepping stone, so we'll see what happens tomorrow.
“I think the team in general is finally understanding how to put together pulling hard and rowing well,” he continued. “That showed up in the results today. One thing that really helped was how the freshmen women started everything, with a really solid and convincing win.”
It was Lehigh's Women's Freshmen Four that got things off on the right foot, winning the Mountain Hawks' first race of the day behind a time of 6:53.65, nearly 20 seconds ahead of the second place finishers, Stony Brook.
“From the crews that won, they were all down at some point in their race,” said Conley. “Especially in the women's freshmen four, once they got the lead, they kept on extending it. That's great to see on the freshmen level, so hopefully we'll continue to do that. That set the tone for the day.”
The Mountain Hawks won the College Men's Freshman Eight as well with a time of 6:53.41. Lehigh also placed a boat in another flight, which finished fourth. Lehigh won the Women's Varsity Four (7:43.99) as well, while a crew finished first in two separate flights of the Men's Varsity Four, posting times of 6:18.88 and 7:00.96, respectively.

Lehigh returns to action on Sunday when it competes in the Braxton Regatta. It marks the team's final race of the fall season.
“The challenge that they will have tomorrow is [fatigue],” said Conley. “They will have raced multiple races in one day, then go out and do the same exact thing the next day against rested crews. They'll be facing crews who have not done that and expect to produce results as good, if not better.”
