BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing team wraps up its fall schedule this weekend when it competes in the Frostbite Regatta on Saturday and the Braxton Regatta on Sunday, both on the Schuykill River in Philadelphia. It marks the Mountain Hawks' last race until the Murphy Cup on Mar. 26.
“The last two races of the fall season will help us understand what to expect with the different style of racing we will see in the spring,” said head coach Brian Conley. “They are no more or less important than any of the other races this fall, but will give us an idea of where to put our focus as we turn to winter training in the offseason.”
The weekend begins on Saturday at the Frostbite Regatta where the Mountain Hawks place 12 different entries across seven different events. It is a 2,000 meter race, the standard distance in spring racing.
“It requires much more consistency and strategy,” said Conely. “It is the crew that is willing to fight the longest that ends up at the finish line first.”
The team then transitions to Sunday's Braxton Regatta, which is a shorter race at 1,500 meters
“The Braxton really forces each athlete to no longer rely on strategy, but just to stay at their maximum,” said Conley. “It really comes down to who can get off the line quickly and find a solid rhythm the fastest. It will be a lot of fun to for the team as we begin to transition into winter training.”
Conley continued, “We not only will be racing on back-to-back days, but we are again racing in multiple events to gain as much race experience as possible in as little time as possible.”
The Mountain Hawks wrap up a busy fall slate having competed in four races in a span of three weeks to help prepare them for the spring schedule.
“The team has done an incredible job all fall of changing their rowing completely and learning how to move the boat more efficiently,” said Conley. “All the student-athletes - from the varsity to the freshmen - have learned that each day is about earning your seat in a boat and that setting a high standard forces you to reach outside of your comfort zones in order to reach those expectations that we have put on ourselves.”
