Lehigh earns huge road win, 11-7 at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Lehigh took a big step towards earning a berth in the 2009 Patriot League Tournament with a hard-fought 11-7 victory over Navy on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Lauren Dykstra and junior Inneke Carmola scored three goals apiece, while Meagan Tenenty scored twice and dished out one assist. The Mountain Hawks improve to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League following the win, while the Midshipmen fall to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in the league.
Lehigh out shot the Midshipmen 27-18 on the day, with Dykstra credited with eight and Carmola and freshman Kelly Draper taking five each. The Mountain Hawks scooped up 19 ground balls for the game, led by Dykstra with four and Draper with three, while freshman Leigh Ann Torcivia won three draw controls. Sophomore Allison Thomas led the Brown and White with two assists, and also caused two turnovers, while Kelsy Ferris stopped six shots in goal.
Erin Rawlick led Navy with six shot attempts to go along with a team-leading four draw controls. Elaina Ponchione scooped up four ground balls and Caitlin Mandrin Hill caused three TOs. Rawlick netted a game-high four goals, while Ponchione stopped nine shots in goal, but only one in the second half.
Lehigh took a 1-0 lead on the strength of a goal by Carmola with 26:48 left on the first half clock. Rawlick tied things at one however with a score just 29 seconds later. Carmola came right back though and scored for the second time, with 25:51 on the clock, but Katrina Nietsch responded for the Midshipmen tying things at two with 14:07 remaining before halftime.
Dykstra got on the board for the first time with a score at the 10:35 mark giving the lead back to the Mountain Hawks yet again. Tenety added to the Lehigh advantage with a goal just 21 seconds before halftime, sending the Mountain Hawks into intermission with a 4-2 cushion.
Navy came out of the halftime break and put a quick end to Lehigh’s lead as Nietsch scored with 27:33 on the clock, and Rawlick followed with her second score just 15 seconds later to tie the score at four. The Midshipmen then took their first lead of the afternoon on the strength of a goal by Mandrin Hill at the 25:22 mark.
Dykstra quickly tied the game however, as she scored eight seconds later, and then Tenety took a feed from Thomas and found the back of the net with 23:51 on the clock putting the Brown and White ahead 6-5.
Carmola added to the Mountain Hawks lead with her third score of the day at the 21:06 mark, and Dykstra’s third score gave Lehigh an 8-5 advantage with 19:55 remaining. Rawlick made it a two-goal game with a score off of a feed from Mandrin Hill with 17:11 on the clock, but Sara MacIntyre responded for the Brown and White with her first score of the day. Thomas assisted on the goal as Lehigh went up 9-6 with just under 15 minutes to play. Thomas then got into the act with a goal of her own off of a feed from Tenety to put Lehigh up four, 10-6.
With 9:31 left to play Rawlick scored her fourth goal of the day, making the score 10-7, but Draper found the back of the net with 3:38 remaining, adding an insurance goal and helping send the Mountain Hawks to their second straight win over Navy.
Lehigh returns to action on Wednesday, April 15 when the Mountain Hawks play host to Monmouth at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The opening draw control is set for 7:00.
