Lehigh seeks clutch hits in loss to Mount St. Mary's

“They did a real good job of maximizing all their opportunities,” Lehigh head coach Sean Leary said. “They came through with some clutch hits at critical times. They were the opposite of us tonight.”

Lehigh jumped on the board early with an RBI double by Geoff Campbell, who continued his hot streak at the plate with a 3-for-4 day, including one RBI and one run.

The Mount added two more insurance runs in the fifth to put the game away. Darr drove in his third run of the game with an RBI single with one out, and another clutch two-out hit by Shane Eyler gave Mount St. Mary’s a 5-1 lead.
Kevin Mihalik pitched 3.1 innings in relief for the Brown and White, giving up just one hit and no runs to keep Lehigh alive. Mihalik struck out one batter and walked just one of the 11 batters he faced.
“Mihalik was terrific,” Leary said. “He really threw the ball well so it was encouraging to see that. He came in and kept us in the ballgame throwing 3.1 shutout innings.”
Lehigh tried to claw back into the game in the sixth when Geoff Campbell led off the inning with a triple. Kevin Mihalik drove the senior shortstop home with a single, and Brendan Pifer added a sacrifice fly that scored Andy Russell to make the score 5-3.
Brady Feigl and Mike Matta came out of the pen for the Mount and locked down the final two innings against the Lehigh batters. The two relievers gave up just two hits and no runs to finish the game.
“We swung the bats much better today,” Leary said. “We just didn’t get the big hit when we needed it. We had a lot of baserunners and didn’t have a lot of clutch hitting.”
