Lehigh wraps up weekend with split at GW

ARLINGTON, Va. – Lehigh split a pair of games against George Washington on Sunday, coming away with a dramatic win in game one, and dropping a weather-shortened game in the second game. The Mountain Hawks move to 3-5 on the season after taking one of three against the Colonials over the weekend. George Washington moves to 2-5 with both of its wins coming against the Mountain Hawks.

The Mountain Hawks rallied in the eighth inning to pull off the 10-9 win in game one of the double-header. Trailing 9-7 with just four outs remaining, Lehigh manufactured three runs – all with two outs in the eighth.

With runners on the corners, Andy Russell stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Kevin Mihalik took advantage and drove both Mountain Hawks home with an RBI single to tie the score at nine. After Mihalik stole second, Brendan Pifer connected on an RBI double that gave Lehigh the lead for good.

“We felt one of the things we do really well is being aggressive on the basepaths,” Lehigh head coach Sean Leary said. “Neither one of those guys would have been able to score without the steal. It was good to get some clutch hits and to execute running the bases.”

Cory Kent (2-0) pitched three innings in relief and earned the second win of his career out of the bullpen. Kent gave up five runs – four earned – and struck out two batters en route to the win. Geoff Campbell came out of the pen in relief of Kent and shut the Colonials down over the final two innings. The senior infielder/pitcher pitched two no-hit innings, allowing just one baserunner on a walk and giving up no runs to earn the save.

“He pitched terrific,” Leary said of Campbell. “It was a high-scoring game and he came in and shut it down. He was outstanding today.”

The Mountain Hawks scored four runs in the seventh inning to take their first lead of the ballgame, 7-5, but the Colonials answered in the bottom half of the inning with four more runs to take the lead back.

Rob Russell pitched four innings in his first start of the season, giving up four runs on six hits. Russell struck out four batters and walked two while receiving a no decision.

Campbell, Russell and Mihalik each drove in two runs from the 2-3-4 spots in the lineup. Campbell and Ryan Gajdos were the only players to log multi-hit games for the Mountain Hawks, but 11 batters earned walks and five players stole a base as Lehigh made the most of its opportunities in the win.

Snow was falling in Arlington from the first pitch of game two, and the umpires called the game after five innings with George Washington leading 12-4. Kevin Mihalik made his first start of the season and was charged with the loss.

“Those conditions were pretty tough,” Leary said of the weather. “It wasn’t an excuse because both teams played in it, but it was just tough out there.”

Lehigh returns to action on Tuesday when it heads to Palm Beach Fla. for the Palm Beach Challenge.
