Lehigh wraps up weekend with split at GW

The Mountain Hawks rallied in the eighth inning to pull off the 10-9 win in game one of the double-header. Trailing 9-7 with just four outs remaining, Lehigh manufactured three runs – all with two outs in the eighth.
With runners on the corners, Andy Russell stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Kevin Mihalik took advantage and drove both Mountain Hawks home with an RBI single to tie the score at nine. After Mihalik stole second, Brendan Pifer connected on an RBI double that gave Lehigh the lead for good.
“We felt one of the things we do really well is being aggressive on the basepaths,” Lehigh head coach Sean Leary said. “Neither one of those guys would have been able to score without the steal. It was good to get some clutch hits and to execute running the bases.”
Cory Kent (2-0) pitched three innings in relief and earned the second win of his career out of the bullpen.

The Mountain Hawks scored four runs in the seventh inning to take their first lead of the ballgame, 7-5, but the Colonials answered in the bottom half of the inning with four more runs to take the lead back.
Rob Russell pitched four innings in his first start of the season, giving up four runs on six hits. Russell struck out four batters and walked two while receiving a no decision.
Campbell, Russell and Mihalik each drove in two runs from the 2-3-4 spots in the lineup. Campbell and Ryan Gajdos were the only players to log multi-hit games for the Mountain Hawks, but 11 batters earned walks and five players stole a base as Lehigh made the most of its opportunities in the win.

“Those conditions were pretty tough,” Leary said of the weather. “It wasn’t an excuse because both teams played in it, but it was just tough out there.”
