Lehigh drops first game at George Washington

“Campbell and Russell were terrific,” Lehigh head coach Sean Leary said. “They had really good days at the plate and had some big hits, but we just couldn’t put a stop to their offense.”
Jordan Warncke took the loss, his second of the season, after throwing 4.1 innings and giving up eight runs, five of them earned. Warncke struck out five batters and walked two before being lifted in the fifth for Mike Lebo.
Lehigh falls to 2-4 on the season with the loss, while the Colonials earned their first win of the year to improve to 1-4.
The Colonials grabbed the lead right off the bat in the first inning, scoring two runs off Warncke in the opening frame. The Mountain Hawks cut the deficit to just one run in the third on a Geoff Campbell solo home run, his first of the season.

Warncke got into a rhythm after the shaky first, and pitched scoreless innings in the second and third. But three runs in the fourth and another three in the fifth spelled the end of the day for the junior righty.
George Washington tacked on two more runs in the fifth to make it a five-run inning before all was said and done. The lead would grow to as much as eight, as the Colonials added two in the sixth and one in the seventh to take a 13-5 lead into the eighth.
“We left some balls up in the zone and their good hitters took advantage of them,” Leary said. “We just need to make some adjustments for tomorrow.”
Lehigh showed signs of a comeback in the eighth, thanks to some situational hitting throughout the lineup. Billy Goldman drove in a run on a ground out to second, then
George Washington escaped the eighth with the lead intact and shut it down with a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the game.
The Mountain Hawks return to action on Sunday at noon for a double-header with the Colonials. Rob Russell will take the mound for the Brown and White in the first game. The game two pitcher has not yet been announced.
“It’s very much like a Patriot League weekend with playing two games against the same team tomorrow,” Leary said. “So we’re looking forward to see how we react to that.”
