Lehigh to face challenging schedule in 2007

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Head Coach Manny Oudin has announced Lehigh’s 2007 women’s soccer schedule. The challenging 18 game slate features ten home games and a trio of matches with NCAA tournament teams from 2007. The Mountain Hawks will be gunning for their fourth straight Patriot League tournament appearance and to prepare for the league season, Oudin has upgraded Lehigh’s non-league schedule with several major conference opponents.

“Our non-league schedule is our toughest in my tenure,” said Oudin, who is entering his sixth season. “We’ve added two big east teams who had great years last year, plus Michigan State and Maryland. We also play Princeton which gives us five very tough non-league games.”

The Mountain Hawks will open up at home on Friday, August 31 against Quinnipiac. The Bobcats are one of six non-league holdovers from the 2006 schedule. Lehigh downed Quinnipiac 1-0 in Connecticut.

Two days later, Lehigh will hit the road for the first time, traveling to New Jersey to face Big East member Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights are the first of three 2006 NCAA participants on Lehigh’s docket this season.

The following weekend, Lehigh will visit Marist on Friday, September 7, before returning home on Sunday to host Michigan State out of the Big Ten in a Sunday afternoon tilt.

Lehigh will face its second Big East foe and second NCAA qualifier on September 14 as regional rival Villanova visits the Ulrich Sports Complex. These two teams did not meet a year ago, but Lehigh enjoyed a 1-0 win at Villanova during the Mountain Hawks’ record setting 2005 season.

The Mountain Hawks’ next three games include a trip to Monmouth (September 16) and home games against annual foes Saint Joseph’s (September 21) and La Salle (September 23). From there, Lehigh will embark on a three match road trip that will culminate in the beginning of Patriot League play, at Holy Cross on October 7. Before that, the Brown and White will visit Maryland for two games against opponents new to the schedule. Lehigh travels to Emmitsburg to face Mount St. Mary’s on September 28, and then heads to College Park two days later to face the Maryland Terrapins out of the ACC.

After opening up league play in Worcester, Massachusetts, Lehigh will return home for a key four game homestand that begins with games against league rivals American (October 12) and Navy (October 14). Lehigh will step out of conference for the final time this season on October 17, when Ivy League foe Princeton visits the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Tigers are just three years removed from a national semifinal appearance. The Princeton match should serve as a useful tune-up for Lehigh, as the home stand will conclude on Saturday October 20 when archrival Lafayette visits. The Mountain Hawks currently own a four game winning streak over their rivals from Easton.

The final regular season road trip will be a tough one for Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks will follow the four game homestand with games at Patriot League rivals Bucknell (October 26) and Colgate (October 28), before returning home to meet Army in the regular season finale on Saturday night November 3.

“There will me no easy games in our league,” says Oudin. “Even the teams that are rebuilding are always tough. Navy is coming off a second round NCAA appearance, Colgate and Bucknell are always strong, and even teams like Lafayette and Holy Cross are much improved.”

The top four teams qualify for the Patriot League tournament, November 9-11 on the home field of the highest seed.

Lehigh will open the 2007 season on August 31 when Quinnipiac visits the Ulrich Sports Complex at 7 p.m.
