Pawlewicz, Kafka earn weekly honors from Patriot League

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh has started the season 3-0 for the first time in school history and Tuesday afternoon a pair of Mountain Hawks were honored by the Patriot League for their contributions to the team’s hot start. Sophomore defender Michaela Pawlewicz was named Defensive Player of the Week, and freshman goalkeeper Julie Kafka was honored as the league’s Rookie of the Week.

Pawlewicz has anchored the Mountain Hawks backline in three victories this season. A second-team All-Patriot League performer a year ago, Pawlewicz and her defensive teammates have yet to allow a goal in three games this season. She helped lead the Brown and White to wins over Buffalo and Manhattan in the season opening BAE Systems Classic, in which the Mountain Hawks were crowned champions and Pawlewicz was named Tournament MVP.

Kafka was named Rookie of the Week after posting shutouts in both of her appearances in the net for the Mountain Hawks. She made three saves in the season opening win over Buffalo, then followed up with an 11 save performance in last Friday’s victory at Villanova. She has yet to be scored upon in her college career, as the Mountain Hawks have held opponents off the scoreboard for over 275 minutes of play.

For the first time in school history Lehigh received votes in the latest Mid-Atlantic regional poll from soccerbuzz.com. The Mountain Hawks return to the pitch on Wednesday night at 7:00 when they welcome La Salle to the Ulrich Sports Complex for their 2005 home opener.
