Lehigh earns tough league win at Lafayette

Forks Twp., PA – In her first game back from injury, sophomore Jocelyn Helwig notched the game-winning goal as the Mountain Hawks defeated arch-rival Lafayette by a 2-1 score Friday night. The win improves Lehigh’s record to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in Patriot League play. The setback drops the Leopards to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1 in the league. The win was also Lehigh's second straight victory at Metzgars Field.
Senior Christene Banda started the scoring, poking a loose ball past Lafayette goalkeeper Ashley Wesmiller to put Lehigh in front 1-0. The two teams battled back-and-forth until the Mountain Hawks built a two-goal cushion as Helwig scored in the 83rd minute. The Helwig score proved to be critical, as the Leopards got on the board less than a minute later, slicing the Lehigh lead to 2-1. However, the Mountain Hawks scratched and clawed, and hung on for the win, despite being out-shot 11-5 on the night.
Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Iwaskiewicz was stellar in net, recording eight saves on the night for Lehigh.
"This is a big win for us because we needed to have some success in the league," said head coach Manny Oudin. "The game was pretty intense throughout but once we were able to settle down, we played pretty well. [Jocelyn’s] goal was a big pick-me-up for the team."
Lehigh is right back in action Monday night, as the Mountain Hawks visit Navy for a Patriot League showdown. Kick-off is set for 7:00 from Annapolis.
