Hamilton, NY – Junior Christene Banda (Rockville, MD/Stone Ridge) scored her second goal of the season, and freshman goalkeeper Erin Iwaskiewicz (Nashua, NH/Nashua) made two saves as Lehigh (3-9, 1-1 Patriot League) blanked Colgate (4-4-2, 1-2 PL) by a 1-0 score on Saturday evening. The win marked Lehigh’s first-ever triumph over the Raiders.
The lone goal of the match came at 18:22 as Banda found the back of the net on a diving header off a free kick. Junior Wendi Croft (Warminster, PA/William Tennet) was credited with the assist. The Banda goal was the only score for the Mountain Hawks, despite the fact that Lehigh fired nine shots on net in the first half alone (14 total in the match). Banda led the Lehigh attack with four shots.
"We did two things especially well tonight," Lehigh coach Julie Leonhardt explained following the win. "Our back four [defenders] and Erin [Iwaskiewicz] did not give Colgate many options, and that was a big factor. Secondly, our outside midfielders – Michi Matter and Michele Adams – took advantage of the space that was in front of them to help keep the pressure on Colgate."
The Mountain Hawks will try to earn their second consecutive Patriot League road win as they travel to Army to battle the Black Knights on Tuesday night. Kickoff is at 7p.m.
