BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Former Lehigh standout Daniela Molina ’07 has been invited to try out for the new Women’s Professional Soccer league (WPS) that will begin play in the spring of 2009. Molina is one of 128 players selected from the United Soccer League to play in the inaugural W-League combine, which will run from September 4-7 in Tampa, Florida and will allow players to showcase their talents for WPS coaches and general managers.
Molina, a two-time All-Patriot League selection for the Brown and White, spent the past season with Jersey Sky Blue of the W-League of the USL. She appeared in eight contests and was credited with eleven shots. Molina ranks among Lehigh’s career leaders in goals (14), points (34) and game-winning goals (six). She also starred in the classroom where she was a three-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and earned her degree in Mechanical Engineering.
In addition, Molina has made her mark internationally where she has played for the women’s national team of her native Colombia. Molina played in all four matches and scored a goal in the 2006 CONMEBOL Women’s Championships, which served as a qualifier for the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The inaugural WPS season kicks off in April with teams in seven cities: Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York/New Jersey, St. Louis and Washington, D.C. W-League players will have their first opportunity to be selected by WPS teams when the WPS General Draft is held on October 6. The new professional league will hold another player draft the week of January 14, 2009, which will be followed by team tryouts in each market.
