Mountain Hawks and Sooners grapple to 18-18 tie

12/3/2005 12:00:00 AM | Men's Wrestling

NORMAN, Okla. – No. 10 Lehigh wrestled its second top five opponent in as many days on Saturday night and the Mountain Hawks bounced back from a loss to Oklahoma State by wrestling to an 18-18 tie with No. 4 Oklahoma at McCasland Fieldhouse. The Mountain Hawks and Sooners split ten bouts, but a rule change eliminated the old criteria decision that would have given the Mountain Hawks a win thanks to Jeff Santo’s tech. fall over Trey Blakely. Instead Lehigh’s record stands at 5-2-1, while the Sooners are now 1-0-1.

“The guys really wanted to come out and prove themselves after last night,” said head coach Greg Strobel. “There weren’t a lot of close matches, they scored big when they had the advantage and we seemed to when we had the advantage.”

“It’s a shame they changed the rules,” Strobel added jokingly afterwards.

The match started with three bouts that ended in bonus points. OU’s second ranked Sam Hazewinkel earned a 18-6 major decision over Lehigh’s Matt Fisk. Then Santo came out and gave the Mountain Hawks the lead, as he scored a takedown, a three-point near fall and a two-point near fall to open up a first period lead, before wrapping up the technical fall with a takedown with 52 seconds remaining in the third period. Oklahoma edged back on top at 141 as top ranked Teyon Ware scored a 13-2 major decision over third ranked Cory Cooperman.

Lehigh evened the match at eight as redshirt freshman Trevor Chinn scored a two point takedown and two point near fall late in the third period to upset fourth ranked Matt Storniolo 7-4.

The Mountain Hawks won the next three bouts to build a 18-8 lead in the dual, as Derek Zinck, Troy Letters and Travis Frick all bounced back from upset losses the night before with victories,  Letters’ win a 13-1 major decision over Jerome Featherstone at 165.

Lehigh nearly won the match at 184 as David Helfrich took No. 10 Justin Dyer to sudden victory. Dyer however, was able to score the winning takedown off a scramble for the 3-1 win, and after the Sooners took the final two bouts of the evening, the match ended in a tie.

The Mountain Hawks will have several weeks off from competition for the holidays and final exams. Lehigh will kick-off the second half of its season on Thursday, December 29 when the Mountain Hawks will travel to Greensboro, N.C. to compete at the Southern Scuffle, a tournament hosted by UNC-Greensboro. The Mountain Hawks will return to dual competition on Friday, January 6, 2006 when they welcome in-state rival Penn State to Stabler Arena.
