Evanston, IL - Two freshmen and two juniors advance to the quarterfinal round of the 40th Annual Midlands Championships. At 157 fourth-seed Derek Zinck scored a 12-4 major decision over Nate Meyer, Iowa State and decisioned Anton Dietzen of Illinois, 5-2. His next opponent is Heath Eslinger, Gator Wrestling Club. At 165, third-seed Troy Letters won by technical fall in 5:20 (18-0) over Ansen Alexsanyan, Michigan State before pinning Jason Ramstetter of the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club in 1:12. Letters now hits the mat against West Virginia’s Tom McMath whom he beat 1-0 at last year’s West Virginia Open. Brad Dillon (a number ten seed) won three bouts at 174, the first and third of those 2-1 hair-raising tie-breaker wins with escapes within 12 seconds of each fifth period of overtime. The opponents were Ralph Everett, Hofstra University and Rashad Evans of Michigan State. Dillon also beat Anthony Magistrelli of Ohio State by an 8-3 margin. Jon Trenge scored a fall at 197 in just 1:58 while leading 7-0 over Chad Mentel of Minnesota, when whipped Iowa’s Ryan Fulsaas, 9-2. Trenge will get his re-match with Michigan’s Kyle Smith, who defeated Jon in Grace Hall on November 22.
Other Lehigh men still alive going into the Saturday evening consolations were Mario Stuart (125), Travis Frick (184) and heavyweight Joe Sahl. Sahl lost to nationally sixth-ranked Pat Cummins of Penn State, before battling back with a win by fall over Russ Davie of Cleveland State. Frick lost a tough 1-0 bout with Jason Rusak (Unattached) after drawing the tournament’s number eight and nine seeds in the first two rounds. Travis beat the ninth seed, Jordan Holm of Northern Iowa, 4-3.
Out of the tournament with back-to-back losses are Tristan Boyd (141) and Tommy Rohn (149), while Cory Cooperman was unable to make weight at the 7:30 am weigh-ins.
Quarterfinal action begins at 7 pm CST with the semifinals at noon Sunday and finals at 7:30 pm.
