Bethlehem, PA –Fifth seeded Dan Hyman had the crowd behind him as he tabbed his second upset of the tournament Saturday evening defeating top seeded Kevin El-Hayek of Harvard with a 3-2 decision. Hyman’s victory helped fuel the fire that propelled Lehigh from third to first after the second session. Lehigh leads all scores with 119.50 points, Pennsylvania sits in second with 99 points and Cornell follows close behind with 93.
In an exciting battle at 133, Hyman stayed alive recording a takedown in the final moments of the bout to upset El-Hayek. Earlier in the day Hyman recorded a 9-1 major decision over fourth seeded Jeff Eveleth of Pennsylvania.
Lehigh will be represented by 6 wrestlers in the finals Sunday night at Stabler Arena. At 125, top seeded Mario Stuart continued to impress, notching a 10-5 decision over fourth ranked Matt Magennis of Army. Stuart will face sixth ranked Steve Popovitch of Columbia in the finals.
Second seeded Warren Stout recorded a 5-2 decision over third seeded Gabe Webster of Cornell, and will take on first seeded Yoshi Nakamura of Pennsylvania in the finals at 157. When these two met during the regular season in the Palestra, Nakamura recorded a 10-4 decision over Stout.
At 165, second seeded Chris Vitale earned the 13-9 decision over third seeded Scott Roth of Cornell. Vitale will face top seeded Josh Henson of Pennsylvania. Henson handed Vitale his first and only dual meet loss of the season when the two met at Pennsylvania.
Top seeded Rob Rohn will represent the Mountain Hawks in the finals at 184. Rohn defeated Karl Rittger of Brown with a 10-5 decision. Rohn will match up against second seeded Clint Wattenberg of Cornell.
At 197, top seeded Jon Trenge squeaked past fourth seeded Mike Faust of Pennsylvania in a close 3-2 decision. Trenge will wrestle third seeded Matt Greenberg of Cornell in the finals.
Lehigh’s Shawn Laughlin, Tristan Boyd and Troy Minarovic earned victories in the consolations to gain valuable team points for Lehigh.
Wrestling action will continue Sunday at noon with consolation semifinals, place matches and wild card meetings beginning at 12:00. Championship finals will begin at 5:00. The championship finals with air live on Service Electric TV-2 and taped delay on Fox Sports Pittsburgh Saturday March 16 at 3:00. The finals can be heard live on the Sports Monster 1230 AM or by logging onto Lehigh’s website.
