Bethlehem, PA – After the first session of the EIWA Championship, Lehigh is currently in third place with 51 points behind Pennsylvania (59) and Cornell (58). The Mountain Hawks were fueled by quarterfinal wins by Mario Stuart, Dan Hyman, Warren Stout, Chris Vitale, Rob Rohn, and Jon Trenge.
The number one seed at 197, Trenge advanced to the semifinals with a pin in the preliminaries and a major decision in the quarterfinals. His pin came in 2:42 over Harvard’s Jonas Corl in the preliminaries and the major was over John Paxton of Army, 16-4. Trenge will take on fourth seeded Mike Faust of Penn in the semifinals, which begin at 7:30 on Saturday evening.
Rohn used a pair of major decisions to advance to the semis. He recorded an 18-4 win over Princeton’s Anthony DeBartolo in the prelims and cruised to a 16-5 win over Graig Cooper of Army in the quarterfinals. Rohn will take on eighth seeded Graig Cooper of Army in the semis.
The upset of the tournament so far was Dan Hyman’s 9-1 major decision over Pennsylvania’s Jeff Eveleth. Hyman, the number five seed, lost to Eveleth a week ago in the Lehigh at Penn dual meet but rebounded with a major in the quarterfinals. Hyman will face top seeded Kevin El-Hayek of Harvard in the semis.
Mario Stuart received a bye in the prelims and cruised to an easy 16-8 major in the quarterfinals defeating eight-seeded Dan Green of Columbia. Stuart will square off against fourth seeded Matt Magennis in the semifinals.
Second seeded Warren Stout advanced to the semifinals with a pair of close decisions. He defeated Jesse Savage of Brown 8-6 in his first bout and scored a 5-2 win over seventh seeded Matt Dudeck of East Stroudsburg in the quarterfinals. Stout will take on third seeded Gabe Webster of Cornell in the semifinals.
In a close battle at 285, Lehigh came up on the losing end as Shawn Laughlin was unable to defeat Matt Feast of Penn. Laughlin got the best of Feast in the Lehigh-Penn dual but suffered a 6-2 loss in the quarterfinals this afternoon.
Tristan Boyd and Greg Chirieleison each suffered losses in the quarterfinals. Boyd lost 11-2 to top ranked Mark Conley of Navy at 141 and Chirieleison was pinned in 1:03 by second ranked Rick Springman of Penn.
Troy Minarovic was the lone Lehigh wrestler not to make it out of the preliminaries but he put forth a valiant effort that had the crowd on its feet. Despite losing to the top seeded Jesse Jantzen of Harvard by a 14-0 score, Minarovic was on his back for nearly two minutes but managed to avoid being pinned.
