Lehigh place two wrestlers in the top three at the Midlands Tournament in Evanston, Illinois, for the first time in 20 years. Sophomore Jon Trenge finished third after defeating second seeded Owen Elzen of Minnesota 6-5 in the consolation finals. Trenge’s only loss of the tournament came at the hands of arguably the best wrestler in modern history, Cael Sanderson of Iowa State. Sanderson is yet to be beaten in his college career and owns a number one national ranking at 197 pounds. The 16-5 loss was the first of the season for Trenge who fell to 5-1 on the season.
Freshman Troy Letters, wrestling unattached, also recorded a third place finish in the tournament with a 17-6 win over 12th ranked Johnny Clark of Ohio State. Letters’ only loss of the tournament was to Minnesota’s Nate Baker in the first round. Letters rebounded with seven straight wins including an overtime decision over 10th ranked Josh Henson of Pennsylvania. Letters is now 7-1 on the season.
Derek Zinck, a freshman also wrestling unattached, went deep into the tournament as well. Zinck won four of his six matches and improved his overall record to 4-2 on the season.
