BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh tuned up for its upcoming Patriot League Tournament appearance with a 13-5 victory over St. Joe’s on Tuesday evening on Senior Day at the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Senior Vienna Pharaon dished out six assists in the win, while sophomore Sara MacIntyre scored four times in a game that Lehigh controlled from start to finish.  With the win, the Mountain Hawks pull their record even at 8-8, while the Hawks fall to 6-8.

“This was a very good effort heading into the tournament this weekend,” head coach Liz Ota said afterwards.  Sara MacIntyre had a huge game, Vienna (Pharaon) was fantastic with her six assists and Kelsy (Ferris) was great again in goal for us.”  She continued, “We did very well with ground balls, our 50-50’s were pretty good and our ball control continues to improve.  We had eight assists on 13 goals which is a good sign and I think that was a good effort.  Everyone was able to play and after coming out a bit flat in the start, we really turned it up, particularly after halftime.”

Lehigh out shot its counterpart 31-19 and scooped up 24 ground balls led by Megan Stoner, Seana Smith and Tess McGrath with four apiece.  The Mountain Hawks were 11-of-15 on clear attempts and three-of-five on position shots as they scored five goals in the opening half and unleashed an eight-goal attack in the second.  Lehigh’s defense continued to put forth a strong effort, forcing 18 Hawk turnovers, while freshman Kelsy Ferris, who was named the Patriot League’s Goalkeeper of the Week on Tuesday, sent back nine shots in 60 minutes of action.

The Mountain Hawks jumped all over St. Joe’s from the start, getting out to a 3-0 lead in the first 12 minutes on two goals from MacIntyre and one from freshman Inneke Carmola.  Jenna Martino got the Hawks on the board for the first time at the 15:18 mark, but Christy Smith and sophomore Tess McGrath scored back-to-back goals to put the home team in front 5-1 with 5:43 left on the first half clock.  Lindsey McCool scored a goal with just 33 seconds remaining in the half to send the teams into intermission with Lehigh ahead 5-2.

Lehigh picked up right where it left off in the second, scoring the first six goals of the half to take an 11-2 lead with 8:47 remaining.  Jessica Westlake scored the Hawks first goal of the second, but Kara Chalanick and freshman Brooke Wiener both scored their first goals of the season to help the Mountain Hawks seal the win.  Christy Smith scored three goals on the night, while Carmola scored twice, leaving her just four goals shy of breaking the all-time mark for a freshman.  Lissy King handed out two helpers, while McGrath and Meghan Tranter each caused one turnover.

Lehigh returns to action on Friday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks take on the American Eagles in the semifinals of the 2007 Patriot League Tournament in Worcester, Massachusetts.  The game between second seeded Lehigh and the third seeded Eagles will begin at 4:00.  All of the action can be heard live on lehighsports.com with Steve Lomangino calling the action.
