WOCRESTER,
Lehigh took a quick 1-0 lead off of a score from Carmola just 1:01 into the game, but American quickly came back with back-to-back goals from
A free position goal by junior Christy Smith with 12:08 left on the clock brought the Brown and White back to within two at 5-3. Sophomore Sara MacIntyre then used a nifty spin move to get free and shoot, which resulted in a score and just a one-goal deficit on the scoreboard at the 11:24 mark. Lane used a spin move of her own to get away from a Lehigh defender and netted her second score of the half with 10:07 to go making the score 6-4, but sophomore Tess McGrath got into the scoring act for the Mountain Hawks with a free position goal and the Brown and White again pulled to within one at 6-5 at the 7:39 mark. Senior captain Vienna Pharaon got Lehigh even with her eighth score of the season at the 3:37 mark, but American re-took the lead off of a score from Kira Sonberg with 1:44 to go in the half, which turned out to be the final goal in the opening 30 minutes as the Eagles took a 7-6 advantage into the intermission.
American scored the first goal of the second half 3:46 in to put the Eagles ahead by two and from there they never looked back, scoring eight more times and shutting down the Lehigh offense. The Mountain Hawks were hurt by turnovers throughout the game, particularly in the second half, while American was sharp in its offensive execution and stingy with its defensive efforts.
Carmola, the 2007 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, finishes her freshman season with 46 goals, just one shy of the freshman record set by MacIntyre just last season. Statistically the two teams were rather even, as American unleashed 31 shots, and the Mountain Hawks were credited with 28. Lehigh scooped up 12 ground balls, led by sophomore Kyle Roth’s three, while Tess McGrath and Carolyn Von Heil both recorded two. Both teams were perfect on clears and for Lehigh, Ferris sent back ten Eagle shots in goal, while American goal keeper Kristine Vida was brilliant in goal, stopping 12 Mountain Hawk shots.
American moves onto the 2007 Patriot League Championship game where the Eagles will take on the top-seeded Holy Cross Crusaders on Sunday afternoon in
