Lehigh keeps it rolling with 20-7 win over La Salle

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh continued its torrid play on Tuesday as the Mountain Hawks downed the La Salle Explorers 20-7 at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Sophomore Lauren Dykstra netted seven goals, while senior Meagan Tenety added five scores as Lehigh won its fourth straight game to improve to 6-3 overall. La Salle, which received two goals apiece from Nora McGurkin, Jill Davis and Ashley Rutz falls to 3-4 following the setback.
Lehigh dominated the Explorers from start to finish outshooting them 33-17, led by Dykstra’s 11 attempts. Lehigh scooped up 31 ground balls as a team, led by Dykstra with seven and Leigh Ann Torcivia and Inneke Carmola with four each. Torcivia also caused a team high three turnovers, while Sarah Fudin and Lauren Murray caused a pair of TOs. Carmola led the Brown and White in assists with two, while in goal Kelsy Ferris started the game and sent back three shots, before giving way to Kaitlin Dean, who sent back a career-best four shots in 15 minutes.
McGurkin led the Explorers with eight ground balls, while Allison Herman caused a pair of turnovers. Stefany McKee took a team-high five shots, while Rutz won five draw controls. In goal for La Salle Mara Schnellenbach turned back seven shots, while Megan Corliss stopped a pair of shots in 12 minutes of action.
Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern offered her thoughts afterwards. “LD (Lauren Dykstra) can be very electric for us, and today it was nice to see the others around her compliment her play. Meagan Tenety was outstanding as was Inneke Carmola.” She continued, “I thought our press was effective and gave them problems and I thought Kaitlin Dean did a very nice job in goal when she got in there.”
The Mountain Hawks jumped all over La Salle right from the start as they led 4-0 less than six minutes into the contest. Allison Thomas, Dykstra, Kelly Draper and Kindall Healy each scored during the early run. Davis and McKee got La Salle to within two scores with 20:34 left on the first half clock, but Carmola and Tenety answered with back-to-back goals for the home team to give the Mountain Hawks a 6-2 lead.
Following a goal by Rutz, Murray and Dykstra scored two more goals for the Brown and White, who led 8-3 with 12:40 to go before the half. Dykstra would add two more scores before intermission as Lehigh took a 10-5 lead into the break.
Rutz scored the first goal of the second half to bring the visitors to within four, but from there Lehigh unleashed a 5-0 run, keyed by two more goals by Dykstra, as the Mountain Hawks opened up a 15-6 advantage. Tenety scored twice during the run, as did senior Sara MacIntyre, who moved into a tie for fifth place in school history for goals scored. MacIntyre is now tied with Anne Weitzman ’92 with 137 career goals.
McGurkin put a temporary stop to the Lehigh barrage with a goal at the 17:02 mark, but the Mountain Hawks again went on a 5-0 run to close things out and win by 13. Carmola, Murray and Dykstra scored once in the final run, while Tenety added two more scores.
During its four-game win streak, Lehigh has outscored its opponents by an average of 17 to 8, while Dykstra has found the back of the net 24 times in those four contests. “I’m not surprised at the success Lauren has been having of late,” Redfern added. “For every goal she scores in a game she takes 100 shots in practice. She’s an incredibly hard worker and it shows in the games.”
Lehigh returns to action on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks wrap up their four game homestand versus the Wildcats of Davidson. Game time is set for noon from the Ulrich Sports Complex.
