PL title on the line Saturday against Holy Cross

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh closes out the 2007-08 regular season on Saturday at Holy Cross. The school’s first ever regular season Patriot League title is on the line, as the Mountain Hawks need to win, coupled with an American loss at Lafayette, to claim first place. The Brown and White are also looking for its 11th road win and sixth league road win, which would set new school records. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 55-48 win at Bucknell on Wednesday. Erica Prosser scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half, and Tricia Smith tied her career high with 18 points and six steals to pace Lehigh.

Holy Cross won this season’s previous match-up, 53-51 in Bethlehem. With the game tied 51-51 and six seconds remaining in regulation, Erica Prosser missed the first shot of her one-and one free throw attempt, and an erratic rebound, gave Laura Aloisi a clear path to the net for a lay-up with four-tenths of a second on the clock, to give Holy Cross a 53-51 lead. The Mountain Hawks had one last shot, but they could not pull off the full court pass, and the Crusaders escaped with a victory.

Since the last time these two teams meet, Holy Cross has gone 4-2 in Patriot League play, picking up wins over Lafayette, Bucknell, Navy and Colgate. The Crusaders have the top three-point shooting team in the league, connecting on 34.4 percent of their shots from beyond the arc, and averaging 5.93 made per game. Bethany O’Dell leads the team with 56 three-pointers, while Briana McFadden ranks second with 47. Laura Aloisi is the best shooter from long range, knocking down 38.5 percent of her shots.

The Crusaders lead the series 35-6, but the Mountain Hawks have won five times since 2001-02. Lehigh did not register a win against Holy Cross between 1994-2001, a span of 18 games. The Mountain Hawks are 2-17 at the Hart Center and have not won there since 2004. Lehigh’s only other win in Worcester came in 2003.

Sophomore guard Alex Ross is just two three-pointers away from setting a new single season school record. She currently has 70 three’s on the season. Sara Ellis ’07 holds the all-time mark with 71, set during the 2005-06 season.
