Lehigh and Army meet Saturday on ESPNU

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks play in their first live national television appearance in school history on Saturday, when they travel to Army for a 2 p.m. game. Lehigh snapped its two-game losing streak on Wednesday, with a 54-50 victory over Navy. The Mountain Hawks were able to hold off a late comeback by the Midshipmen, to secure their 14th win of the season, the most since 2004-05. Tricia Smith scored a career high 18 points in the game, and also led the team with seven rebounds. Lehigh forced a season high 27 turnovers, including 12 steals, led by Haly Crites with three. The Mountain Hawks are now in a three-way tie for second place, as Holy Cross and American also carry 6-3 records in the Patriot League.

Army claimed sole possession of first place on Wednesday, with a 56-54 victory over Holy Cross. Alex McGuire hit a lay-up with three seconds remaining to secure the Black Knights 16th win of the season. Stefanie Stone and McGuire both scored a team high 15 points, while Stone added 10 rebounds, for a double-double. The Black Knights possess the league’s most powerful offense, scoring 60.5 points per game, while holding opponents to 55.6 points against, second best in the league. Their scoring margin of +4.9 is almost double that of the next closest team, Lehigh, whose margin is +2.8. Army also has one of the best ball handling teams in the league, as it is tied for first with the Mountain Hawks with a +1.58 turnover margin.

In this season’s previous meeting, Melissa Rich sank two free throws with five seconds left in overtime to give Lehigh a 59-57 win over Army at Stabler Arena. Alex Ross scored five of Lehigh’s seven overtime points, en route to a game high 17 points. Ross also tied her career high with five three-pointers, shooting five-of-seven from long range in the game. Megan Evans had a double-double, with 14 points and 16 rebounds, to pace the Black Knights.

Following its win, Lehigh took a 21-20 lead in the all-time series. The Mountain Hawks have now taken the last two meetings from Army. The last time the Brown and White won in West Point, N.Y., was 2005, a 72-64 victory. Lehigh is 8-11 all-time at Christl Arena, including 7-10 in Patriot League regular season games.

Saturday’s game airs live on ESPNU beginning at 2 p.m. Amy Lawrence will be doing the play-by-play and Leslie Hill will provide color commentary.
