Lehigh and American face-off on Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks open the second half of their league schedule at home against American on Saturday. For the first time since 2004, Lehigh is in first place at the halfway mark of league play. The Brown and White are in a three-way tie for first with Army and Holy Cross, who also have 5-2 records against league opponents. American, Lafayette and Bucknell are not far behind, as all three teams have 4-3 league records. In the Mountain Hawks last game, a 53-51 loss to Holy Cross, Melissa Rich led Lehigh with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Alex Ross added 12 points, all coming in the second half.

American comes into this game on a three-game winning streak, tied for its longest of the season. Last week, the Eagles defeated Lafayette 68-54, led by Talicia Jackson, who had a team high 16 points. Since the last time these teams met, American has gone 4-2 in league play, picking up wins over Colgate, Navy, Holy Cross and Lafayette. Liz Hayes has been the go-to player on offense all season, leading the team in scoring 10 times and currently ranks third in the Patriot League with 13.7 points per game. Hayes is also fourth in the league with 3.45 assists and second with 2.23 three-point field goals made per game.

In this season’s previous meeting, Lehigh relied on great defense in the first half, holding the Eagles to just nine points, to cruise to a 55-37 win, for its first Patriot League victory of the season. Ross had a game high 11 points, while Rich chipped in with 10 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Tricia Smith added seven points, six rebounds and six steals, while also holding Liz Hayes, the league’s second leading scorer at the time, to just three points (0-10 FG, 3-4 FT).

Saturday is Lehigh’s “Pack the House” night, when the Mountain Hawks try to fill as many people as possible into Stabler Arena, in a competition with other Patriot League schools. Another promotion Lehigh is also participating in on Saturday is the WBCA’s Think Pink initiative. As part of this promotion, Lehigh players will be wearing pink t-shirts during their pre-game warm-up, and head coach Sue Troyan has promised to pledge $1 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure project, for ticket sold to Saturday's game.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Stabler Arena on Saturday. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 610-7LU-GAME, by logging onto Lehighsports.com or at the arena box office prior to tip-off.
