BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh will start the 2008 portion of its schedule on the road at Yale on Thursday, after hosting the Christmas City Classic last weekend. The Mountain Hawks defeated Brown, 68-38, in the opening round, led by Kaela Pearce and Courtney Dentler, who both set several career highs in the game. Pearce recorded seven field goals, seven assists and 20 points; all career highs. Dentler also set career highs with 10 rebounds, seven points and two blocks. The 30-point margin of victory was the largest for Lehigh since February 26, 2005, when the Mountain Hawks defeated Lafayette, 74-43. Lehigh faced Rhode Island in the championship game, and for the second straight year, the Brown and White fell on a last second three-pointer. The Rams’ Safi Mojidi hit the shot with nine seconds remaining, to give her team a 50-47 lead. Lehigh made one last attempt to tie the game, but Alex Ross’ shot clanked off the back iron. After the game, both Ross and Pearce were named to the all-tournament team for their outstanding performances.
The Bulldogs have lost their last two games, after picking up their first two wins of the year earlier in December. In Yale’s most recent game, it traveled to South Florida, losing to the Bulls, 105-71. Despite the lopsided score, the Bulldogs still had four players reach double digits, including freshman Lindsey Williams, who recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Yale shot well in the first half, connecting on 42.4% of its shots, but the defense struggled all game, allowing South Florida to shoot 57.4% from the field, including 66.7% in the second half.
The Mountain Hawks and Bulldogs are meeting for the 20th time in school history, with Yale holding a slight 11-8 edge in the series. Lehigh has lost the last two meetings, with its last victory coming in the 2004-05 season, a 70-66 victory in Bethlehem. The Brown and White are 3-6 all time at the John J. Lee Amphitheater, including 1-6 in its last seven trips.
Thursday’s game can be heard live on 91.3 WLVR-FM in the Lehigh Valley and around the world on Lehighsports.com, with streaming provided by Yahoo! Sports. Jeff Tourial will call the action, with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
