BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh returns to Stabler Arena Saturday afternoon against NJIT, for its second game of a four game home stand. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a tough 53-49 loss to Long Island on Wednesday night. Lehigh put together one of its best shooting halves of the year, connecting on 40.7% of its shots in the first half, but it was not enough as the Blackbirds escaped from Bethlehem with the win. Freshman Erica Prosser earned her first start of the year and made the most of it, putting in a game high and career high 19 points in the losing effort. Alex Ross also chipped in with 10 points and Haly Crites added eight points and a team high eight rebounds. LIU was led by Valerie Nainima with 15 points and Chelsi Johnson with 13 points. Nainima and Johnson each hit three three-pointers for LIU, who shot .389 from three-point range for the game.
The Highlanders have lost their last two games, following their first win of the year against UMBC. On Wednesday, NJIT hosted Princeton and it was the Tigers who came away with a 56-45 victory. Erika Velez and Jessica Gerald each scored a team high 12 points for the Highlanders, who picked up their fifth loss of the year. NJIT struggled to find its shot in the first half, connecting on just 17.2% of its shots and scoring 13 points. The teams each put up 32 points in the second half and the Tigers held on for the win. Velez shot 5-of-10 from the floor and also added eight rebounds, four assists and six steals.
The schools are meeting for just the second time, with Lehigh winning last year’s meeting in Newark, N.J., 70-44.
