Mountain Hawks seek first win of the year

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh will look to even its record at 1-1 with its first road game of the year against Fordham on Saturday night. Lehigh opened the season with a last second loss to Saint Joseph’s last Saturday night in Bethlehem, Pa. The Mountain Hawks had a 15 point lead with eight minutes remaining, but could not hold on for the win, as the Hawks came away with a 60-59 victory. Junior Melissa Rich led all scorers with 17 points and added a team high seven rebounds in the losing effort. Tricia Smith showed no signs of last season’s injury bothering her, as she played 29 minutes, scoring 10 points and adding six rebounds and three steals.

The Rams opened their season with a 65-53 loss to cross-town rival Manhattan. On Wednesday, Fordham battled last year’s Cinderella story, Marist. The Rams were able to stay with the Red Foxes for most of the game, however, Marist proved to be too strong down the stretch, holding on for the 75-55 win. Megan Mahoney had a team high 17 points for Fordham and Annie Zopf chipped in with 15 points and four assists in the losing effort.

The Rams lead the all-time series 12-0. From 1990-95, Fordham was a member of the Patriot League and recorded 10 league wins over Lehigh in that time. The Rams also defeated Lehigh 93-61 in the Patriot League Tournament in 1991. The only time the teams have met outside of a Patriot League contest was during the 1976-77 season.
