Mountain Hawks release 2006-07 schedule

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan has announced the Mountain Hawks’ 2006-07 schedule. The Mountain Hawks will look to be a strong competitor in the Patriot League and hope to continue posting top numbers in the league both individually and as a team. Lehigh will face a difficult stretch of non-conference games that will prepare them for another season of cutthroat league play.

“The schedule is pretty challenging,” said 11-year head coach Sue Troyan. “I’m looking at it from the perspective that the out-of-conference games will be a balance of success and challenge in preparation for what we’ll see in the Patriot League.”

The Mountain Hawks’ challenging non-conference schedule kicks into high gear when Lehigh takes on Big East contender Syracuse on November 19 and is marked by a series of standout opponents. The list of non-conference challengers includes Mid-American teams Ohio, Akron, and Central Michigan as well as Atlantic-Coast powerhouse NC State. Lehigh will wrap up December with the annual Christmas City Classic that’ll feature Central Michigan, Gardner-Webb and Seton Hall. The Mountain Hawks will close out the non-conference portion of the schedule when Ivy League competitor Yale comes to Stabler Arena on January 3.

Lehigh will kick off its Patriot League schedule in Stabler Arena with the first of 14 straight league competitions. The Mountain Hawks will look to notch a victory against their first league opponent, American on January 6. The Mountain Hawks will follow up their league opener with a tough pair of road games against the Midshipmen of Navy on January 9 and defending League champion Army on January 13.

The Mountain Hawks also hope to clinch an exciting win over archrival Lafayette when they face the Leopards for the first time in the season on January 20 at Stabler Arena. Lehigh will face the Leopards again late in the season while on the road, but will return home to finish off the regular season with a pair of games against last year’s second and third place finishers in the Patriot League. The Mountain Hawks will look to once again defeat Bucknell, who finished third, on February 20 after a thrilling 56-55 win last year on the Bison’s home court. Lehigh will then face Holy Cross, who finished second, on February 24 to close out the season.

“Last year, the league was young since there was a lot of turnover from the previous season with seniors graduating,” said Troyan. “There’s been little turnover this year. There’ll be a lot of parity and not a big difference from the top and bottom teams. It’ll be great competition in which everyone will have to perform every night. There won’t be a team or a game where it’ll be a guaranteed win.”

This year’s Patriot League Tournament will be of a somewhat different format than in recent years. The quarterfinal and semifinals games will take place at the same site. The championship game will still take place at the home of the highest remaing seed. This year, Navy will host the quarterfinals and semifinals on March 3-4 with the championship game occurring on March 7.

The Mountain Hawks 2006-07 season will commence with a game against Long Island University on November 12 in Brooklyn, N.Y.
