Lehigh set to host ninth annual Christmas City Classic

Following its longest layoff in 12 years, Lehigh returns to the Stabler Arena hardwood on Thursday to host Fairfield, New Hampshire, and Towson in the ninth annual Christmas City Classic tournament. The Mountain Hawks will be looking to build on their 16-point win over VCU last time out, a game in which senior captain Jenny Callan scored a career high 25 points and matched a Lehigh record with 21 rebounds.

All three of Lehigh’s wins entering the tournament have come on its home floor, but success won’t come easy for LU. Each of the three visiting teams arrives in Bethlehem with a winning record, and both Fairfield and New Hampshire are 3-1 on the road this season.

In the tournament’s previous eight years, Lehigh has reached the finals on five occasions, but the Mountain Hawks have captured the title only once.

Lehigh dropped its only previous meeting with Fairfield, a 64-62 decision in Connecticut during the 1995-96 season. Kim Behrens scored 23 points for the visitors in a losing effort. The two teams have never squared off in Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks hold a 10-7 record against Towson, with the last meeting coming in the championship of the 1998 Christmas City Classic. The Tigers won that game, and the tournament, by a 69-66 score. Lehigh has never faced the University of New Hampshire in women’s basketball action.
