Lehigh returns to the court this weekend as the Mountain Hawks take part in the Mission Management & Trust Fiesta Bowl Classic, hosted by the University of Arizona. Lehigh will take on the host Wildcats in the opening round on Saturday, before meeting either Chicago State or Tulane on Sunday. Lehigh enters the weekend with a 2-3 overall record, thanks to a 19-point win over Monmouth on Monday - Lehigh’s largest win of the season. Junior Sara Ellis set a new school record with eight three-pointers, and classmate Adrienne Blount pulled down a personal best 14 rebounds in the win. As a team, the Mountain Hawks dominated on the boards, with a commanding 23-rebound edge on the glass.
Lehigh’s first round opponent is host Arizona. The Wildcats are 2-2 after a tough three point loss at home to No. 20 Utah on Saturday. Four Wildcats scored in double figures, led by 17 from senior guard Natalie Jones.
Lehigh will venture into un-chartered waters this weekend, as LU has never faced any of the other three teams in the tournament.
Although Lehigh and Arizona have never squared off on the hardwood, the Mountain Hawks and Wildcats have met before in Tucson. In May, Lehigh and Arizona competed in the NCAA softball championship tournament at Hillenbrand Stadium. In another Lehigh-Arizona connection, Dr. Peter Likins, the current UA president, was Lehigh’s president from 1982-1997.
Saturday’s Lehigh game tips off at 5:30 pm EST, with radio coverage getting underway at 5:15 on WLVR-FM and on lehighsports.com.
