Lehigh hosts Bucknell to open 2005 tournament play
3/2/2005 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
Lehigh begins the 2005 postseason on Thursday as the No. 2 Mountain Hawks host seventh-seed Bucknell in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League tournament at Stabler Arena. The Mountain Hawks just completed their best regular season yet under Patriot League Coach of the Year Sue Troyan, winning 18 games and a school-record 10 league contests. Lehigh enters this year’s tournament sporting its highest ever seed, thanks in large part to an 11-3 record at home. Lehigh has never been as high as a two seed in the Patriot League tournament prior to this season. The Mountain Hawks have been the three-seed five times, including the 2001-2004 tournaments.
The Mountain Hawks first-round opponent is the Bucknell Bison. Bucknell is a young squad, featuring All-League second team member Lindsey Hollobaugh, a sophomore, as well as freshmen Kesha Champion and Hope Foster, both members of the league’s rookie team. Lehigh defeated the Bison twice during the regular season, though the eight-point win at Stabler was the smallest margin of victory for Lehigh in any league home game this season. Lehigh and Bucknell have met 53 times on the hardwood over the years, with Lehigh holding a slight 27-26 edge. Bucknell had won four of the previous six meetings between the two teams at Stabler Arena until Lehigh earned a 52-44 win here in January. Thursday’s other match-up pits No. 3 Army against the No. 6 Raiders of Colgate. That contest gets underway at 5:30 at Stabler Arena. The Lehigh-Bucknell clash will get underway at 8:00, with television coverage of both games on Service Electric 2 Sports, lehighsports.com, and also via satellite. Steve Degler will broadcast the Lehigh action on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 as well as lehighsports.com beginning at 7:45. Tickets to the tournament can be purchased at the Stabler Arena box office on game day.
