Bethlehem, PA – For the third time in the last four weeks, Lehigh guard Sara Ellis has been recognized by the Patriot League as its Player of the Week. Ellis had yet another sensational week on the hardwood in helping her squad to two more wins – including a lopsided decision over Patriot League foe American.
In three games last week, Ellis averaged 19.3 points per contest on 47% shooting. The sophomore connected on 11-of-23 attempts from beyond the three-point arc (47.8%), while sinking 11-of-12 attempts from the free throw line (92%). In Saturday’s win over American, Ellis lit up Stabler Arena for 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting. The sharpshooter was 5-of-8 from long range, and three-of-four from the charity stripe. The 26 points matches a personal best set earlier this season. Ellis has been especially strong from the free throw line of late, sinking 27 of her last 31 attempts (87.1%). She leads the Patriot League at 3.00 three-point field goals per game, ranks second in the league in three-point field goal percentage (41.5%), and Ellis ranks in the top ten nationally (eighth as of January 3) in three's per contest. Ellis has made a rapid ascent toward the top spot of Lehigh’s record book, already ranking sixth all-time in three-point field goals made with 82. The Patriot League Player of the Week is the third for Ellis this season, and the fifth for Lehigh – including each of the last four weeks. Senior captain Jessica DePalo has won the award twice. The weekly honor is voted on by members of the media as well as the league’s eight sports information directors. Lehigh (9-4 overall, 1-0 Patriot League) has matched its best-ever start under tenth year head coach Sue Troyan. The Mountain Hawks return to the court on Wednesday night, as they visit rival
