First place showdown pits American at Lehigh Saturday
2/13/2004 8:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Lehigh returns home to host American in the opener of a three-game homestand on Girl Scout Day and National Girls & Women in Sports Day. The Mountain Hawks and Eagles are two of four teams that enter the action in a first place tie atop the Patriot League standings (along with Colgate and Holy Cross). Lehigh looks to get back on track after falling Wednesday night at Bucknell. The defeat marked Lehigh’s third setback in the last four games. That night, Jessica DePalo posted her fourth straight 20+ point performance, netting 28 in the loss. For the Eagles, Kim Salem and Kaitlin Schuyler each scored 17 points in a win over Navy on Wednesday. American’s win on Wednesday stopped a two game losing streak. In the other meeting between the two teams, the Mountain Hawks defeated the Eagles 69-55 at Bender Arena in Washington. Sara Ellis scored a then-career high 19 points in the victory, while Jessica DePalo added 19 points and nine rebounds. American has dominated the all-time series between the two schools, winning seven of the ten previous meetings. The Eagles had won three in a row until Lehigh topped American last month, marking the Mountain Hawks first-ever win at American in seven tries. At halftime of Saturday afternoon’s contest, the Mountain Hawks will honor one of the greatest players in the program’s history: Anne Tierney. Tierney is the school’s all-time scoring leader, and she holds the Patriot League record for career rebounds. Tierney was the Patriot League’s women’s basketball scholar-athlete of the year twice, and she earned the Athletics Department’s top honor as a senior when she was named Lehigh’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Her number 41 will hang from the rafters at Stabler Arena beginning with Saturday’s ceremony. Action gets underway at 1:00 on Saturday afternoon. The game can be heard live in the Lehigh Valley on 91.3 FM (WLVR), and worldwide on Lehigh’s web site at lehighsports.com beginning with pregame coverage at 12:45.
