Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh freshman point guard Dawn Gorynski has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year, and senior captain Anne Tierney has been named to the All-Patriot League First Team for the fourth straight year. The all-league teams, voted on by the Patriot League’s eight coaches, were announced Wednesday. Gorynski made an immediate impact on the court in her debut campaign. She started the team’s first 25 games, and logged more minutes on the court than any other Mountain Hawk. Her hard work and determination paid off, as she led the Patriot League in three-point field goal percentage (.416) and assist-to-turnover ratio (+2.33). Gorynski also paced the Mountain Hawks and finished fifth in the league, averaging 3.50 assists per contest. Her 10.5 points per contest ranks second on the team. Gorynski holds a 3.71 grade point average in the College of Arts & Sciences. "Dawn is very deserving of being honored as the top rookie in our league," observed Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan. "She is as hard working and committed a player as we have ever had in our program. As she has grown and matured into the floor leader of our team, our program has become stronger and our results have improved. She has played a pivotal role in our league success this year." Tierney becomes the first player in Patriot League women’s basketball history to be named to the all-league first team on four occasions. In her senior campaign, Tierney was the only player in the Patriot League to average a double-double (14.2 ppg, 11.8 rpg) in league contests. Overall, she led the team and ranked second in the league, averaging 9.5 rebounds per contest. Tierney also leads the team in scoring, at 12.8 points per game. "It is a tremendous accolade and honor for Anne to be selected as a first team selection for the fourth straight year," Troyan points out. "She epitomizes everything we want our program to be about: hard work, discipline, commitment, dedication, leadership and achievement. She is the total package as a person, player, and student, and she has played a pivotal role in our program throughout her four years." Tierney has already shattered a number of school and league records. She is Lehigh’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder, and the Patriot League’s all-time leader in rebounds as well. Tierney is one of only two players in league history to score over 1,500 career points while pulling down over 1,000 career boards. The two-time Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year has also recorded 54 career double-doubles, and has made more free throws than anyone else in Lehigh history. Tierney holds a 3.87 cumulative GPA as a double major in Economics and Finance, and has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District II team three times. Gorynski, a member of the league’s all-rookie team, set a new Lehigh record by earning league Rookie of the Week accolades on six different occasions. She becomes Lehigh’s first Rookie of the Year selection since Tierney accomplished the feat in the 1999-2000 season. Lehigh begins its quest for a Patriot League title on Friday when the third-seeded Mountain Hawks take on No. six Army in a quarterfinal match-up. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:35 from The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. The game will be broadcast live on WLVR-FM and on the Lehigh web site. Tickets for the tournament can be purchased through the Lehigh Ticket Office at (610) 7LU-GAME. 2003 All-Patriot League First Team
