Bethlehem, PA – For the third consecutive year, Lehigh senior forward Anne Tierney has been selected to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District II University Division team. The team is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Tierney has excelled both in the classroom and on the basketball court in her memorable time at Lehigh. The double major in Economics and Finance currently boasts a 3.87 grade point average (GPA), and has been a Dean’s List student every semester at Lehigh. Tierney earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the Fall 2002 semester. In each of the last two seasons, Tierney was named the Patriot League’s Women’s Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year. On the court, Tierney has shattered several school records and has virtually re-written Lehigh’s record book. She is Lehigh’s all-time leader in career points scored and rebounds, as well as free throws made. Tierney also holds the distinction of being the top rebounder in Patriot League history, and is one of only two in league history to amass over 1,500 points while collecting more than 1,000 rebounds. The two-time team captain has recorded over 50 double-doubles so far in her career. Tierney has been a Patriot League All-First Team selection in each of her first three seasons, and was the league’s Rookie of the Year as a freshman. "Being selected to this prestigious group is a tribute to Anne's dedication, discipline and hard work both in the classroom and on the basketball court," said Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan. "She is an outstanding representative of all student-athletes in our league, excelling at the highest level in everything she does." The Patriot League boasts three of the five spots on the District II team. In addition to Tierney, American senior Katryn Costenbader and Navy junior Courtney Davidson are also on the squad. Duquesne senior Beth Friday and Penn State junior Kelly Mazzante round out this year’s District II team. To qualify for the team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, and a starter or significant reserve on her team. Tierney and the other District II team members are now candidates for the national team, which will be selected by the CoSIDA board and announced on Friday, March 7, 2003.
