Lehigh’s women’s basketball program has announced its incoming class for the 2002-2003 season. Three newcomers join a Mountain Hawks squad that returns all 12 letterwinners from last year’s team – a team that won a school record eight Patriot League games. Post players Lauren Reini and Jenny Callan, along with guard Dawn Gorynski join the team in pursuit of a league title and subsequent NCAA berth.
Lauren Reini (Oregon City, OR/Oregon City) will be called upon to spell senior Anne Tierney in the middle. Reini holds the distinction of being the tallest Mountain Hawk, standing at 6’3". She comes to Lehigh no stranger to success, as her Oregon City high school squad captured two state championships.
"Lauren will provide a different look at the center position bringing more size inside than what we have had in the past," says Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan, set to enter her eighth season. "We believe she will push all of the returning players for playing time in the post and will make the position, practice, and playing time all very competitive."
Also pushing for playing time in the paint is Jenny Callan (Lisle, IL/Benet Academy). Callan comes to Lehigh from Benet Academy, where she holds multiple school records including being their all-time leading rebounder.
Troyan is excited about having Callan on the squad: "Jenny is a strong and versatile post player who has the ability to play with her back to the basket or move out to the perimeter and play facing the basket," Troyan points out. "We feel that Jenny will push all of the upperclassmen post players for playing time, and will make our post positions extremely competitive."
Newcomer Dawn Gorynski (Bayside, NY/St. Francis Prep) will try to earn floor time at the point guard spot this season. Gorynski holds the school record for points scored, and was a member of a St. Francis Prep squad that won the state title in three of her four years.
"Dawn is a highly talented point guard who should make an immediate impact in our program," Troyan predicts. "She is an overachiever by nature and works very hard at improving her game. A legitimate scorer and three-point threat, Dawn will provide an enhanced dimension to our point guard position."
Lehigh has all five starters back from last year’s team, including All-Patriot League selections Anne Tierney and Carli Toliver. The Mountain Hawks open their season on Friday, November 23 when they host Santa Clara at Stabler Arena.
