Delaware State wins consolation game

Bethlehem, PA – Freshman Tameka Nugent banked a layup off the glass with 1.4 seconds remaining to propel Delaware State past Elon by a score of 56-55 Sunday afternoon at Stabler Arena in the consolation game of the fifth annual Christmas City Classic. The dramatic finish gives the Hornets (1-3) their first win of the season, while the loss drops the Phoenix to 0-3. The Hornets battled back from a 13 point second half to secure the ‘w’. Nugent’s basket gave her a total of nine points, second on the DSU squad to Terrelle Waller. The freshman poured in 16 to lead all scorers. Elon was paced by Mariam McLeod and Anestha Blakeney, who scored ten points apiece. The contest was sloppy at times, with a combined 49 turnovers on the afternoon. The Phoenix hurt themselves at the free throw line, sinking only nine of 21 attempts. Meanwhile, the Hornets were 14-15 from the stripe.
