Bethlehem, PA – Freshman Kelly Berk’s 10 second half points rallied Lehigh from a 36-33 halftime deficit to defeat Ilirija-Slovenia by a score of 74-64 in an exhibition contest Friday night at Stabler Arena. "Kelly gave us a big spark off the bench," said Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan following the win. "Defensively, though, we need to do a much better job in transition to be successful when the regular season begins." Slovenia jumped out early, thanks to a strong effort by Sasa Stubler. Stubler was 4-5 beyond the three-point arc, and led her squad with 21 points on the night. The Mountain Hawks came back in the second half, as Berk finished the night 7-8 from the field, pouring in 14 points. Junior captain Anne Tierney was 10-12 from the free throw line, and led Lehigh in the scoring column, with a game-high 25 points. Sophomore Jana Ransom and freshman Jessica DePalo chipped in ten points apiece for the Mountain Hawks. Ransom and freshman Chantal St. Laurent each had five steals in the win. Lehigh forced 34 turnovers on the night, but made a number of its own mistakes, giving up the ball 27 times. After the game, Kelly Berk was pleased with the win, but recognized that the defense must improve. "It’s nice to pick up the win, but we’ve got a lot of work to do defensively [in practice] before next week," Berk said. "We’ll practice hard to be ready for Princeton." The Mountain Hawks wrap up their exhibition schedule with a 1-1 mark, and will now prepare to open the season at Princeton on Friday, November 16th, at 7:00. That game will be broadcast live on the Lehigh web site at www.lehigh.edu.
