BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The annual Patriot League women’s basketball preseason poll was announced on Tuesday and the Mountain Hawks (97 points) with 13 first place votes are the favorite heading into the season. The poll is voted on by coaches and sports information directors around the Patriot League.
Lehigh finished ahead of American and Holy Cross who tied for second with 76 points. The Eagles were the only other team to receive first place votes with three.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 2008-09 season that was the most successful in program history. The Brown and White won a program-record 26 games, its first Patriot League regular season title and made a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
The League also announced its individual awards on Tuesday as junior Erica Prosser was selected as the Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year. The reigning Player of the Year, Prosser averaged 14.2 points per game last season and also led the league with 144 assists.
Senior guard Alex Ross will join Prosser as a selection on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team. Joining the two Mountain Hawks on the All-League Team are Michelle Kirk from American, Erin Anthony (Army), and Briana McFadden (Holy Cross).
Ross, a Second Team All-Patriot League selection last season, has established herself as one of the most prolific three-point shooters in team history. She currently is in second place all-time with 210 career threes. Ross is also one of only 13 Lehigh women’s basketball players to have over 1,000 career points.
The Mountain Hawks will start the season on the road against Lipscomb on November 13, at 8:30 p.m.
