BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh celebrated its magical championship season at the Charles F. ’38 and Helen Marie Zell women’s basketball banquet on Saturday, April 25 at the University Center on the Asa Packer Campus. Three Lehigh players captured awards on the evening, in a program that included dinner, presentation of four program awards, reflections from the program’s four departing seniors, and the viewing of a highlight film that looked back at the Mountain Hawks’ 2008-2009 championship season.
Sophomore Erica Prosser received the Athlete of the Year award. The Athlete of the Year award is presented to the team member who makes the most outstanding athletic contribution to the accomplishments of the team. Prosser was named the 2009 Patriot League Player of the Year and a First-Team All-League selection after leading the league in scoring during PL play at 15.9 points per game. She also finished the season ranked second in assists and third in steals. Prosser also earned four Patriot League Player of the Week awards throughout the course of the season.
Claire Sullivan '08 was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season. The Scholar-Athlete award goes to the student-athlete who in the eyes of his/her teammates exemplifies the ideal of the scholar-athlete. A Presidential Scholar, Sullivan carries a 3.75 cumulative GPA as a political science major. On the court, she ranked second on the Mountain Hawks this season with 125 assists and finished her career in third place on the school’s all-time list for career helpers.
Senior Melissa Rich received the Coaches Award. The Coaches Award is presented to the individual who made significant contributions to the well being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement, or special leadership. Rich earned a spot on the 2009 Patriot League All-Tournament Team and received high praise from her coaches and teammates for her team-first attitude and willingness to mentor her younger teammates.
The final award handed out was the Sixth Man Award, which is given to an individual or group of people who have made a major impact on the program. This year’s recipient was strength and conditioning coach Eric Markovcy, who received the honor for the work he did with the Mountain Hawks during the off-season and throughout the regular season in terms of preparing them physically for the rigors of a college basketball season.
