Lehigh shoots for first 20-win season in 19 years

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks return to the road tonight as they square off with the Colgate Raiders on Cotterell Court. Lehigh rolled to a 61-43 victory over the Raiders in the teams’ last meeting, on Jan. 21, and the Mountain Hawks have now won the last six games against Colgate, dating back to 2006. Lehigh earned its second consecutive win on Saturday, against Army, which kept the Brown and White in a tie with American for the top spot in the Patriot League. The Mountain Hawks have already won as many games (19) as any team in Lehigh head coach Sue Troyan’s tenure, and will be looking to seal the school’s first 20-win season since 1989-90.

Lehigh benefitted from 33 points off free throws, including a school-record-tying 13 from freshman Alexa Williams, as it earned a 66-57 victory over Army on Saturday in Stabler Arena. Lehigh closed out the first half on a 17-2 run to open up a double-digit lead. Lehigh locked it down defensively at the end of the first half, holding the Black Knights scoreless for the final 5:37 of the period. Williams, Erica Prosser and Alex Ross each scored 17 points in the win. It’s the highest point total a trio of Mountain Hawks have reached this season. Williams was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday for her performances in the first two starts of her career last week.

Colgate earned its first win of the Patriot League season in dramatic fashion last Wednesday when the Raiders knocked off Lafayette, 62-61. The Raiders missed free throws down the stretch that could have sealed the game, and gave Lafayette one final attempt to tie the game, but Cristin Zavocki’s 3-pointer was off the mark. The win ended a 26-game losing streak in regular season league games for the Raiders.

Lehigh and Colgate have met 45 times on the basketball court. The series has been tightly contested, with Lehigh holding just a 24-21 advantage all time. Each school has gone through stretches of dominance in the series history, with the Mountain Hawks holding the recent edge. Colgate controlled the early portion of the matchups, winning 10 of the first 14 through 1995. But the Mountain Hawks won 12 of the next 15 from 1996 through 2001. From 2002-2006, the Raiders won eight of the next 10, but they have not won since. Lehigh claimed victory in the last six meetings, including a 61-43 win in the last meeting on Jan. 21 in Stabler Arena.

Wednesday’s game is scheduled to tipoff at 7 p.m. at Cotterell Court.
