League honors record-setting Ross, Williams

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The holidays came a little early for two Lehigh women’s basketball players on Monday. That’s because Alex Ross and Alexa Williams got some early presents when the Patriot League dolled out its weekly awards. Ross was named Player of the Week for her record-setting week and Williams earned her second Rookie of the Week award after setting a career high for points scored against NJIT.

The Mountain Hawks enjoyed a successful week of games traveling to the Prudential Center for a 65-54 win against NJIT on Thursday and running away with a 78-45 win at home against Binghamton on Saturday. The victories moved Lehigh’s record to 8-3 on the season heading into the Christmas City Classic, which will be held at Stabler Arena on Dec. 29-30.

Ross dominated from downtown in the two wins, setting a career high with seven 3-pointers made against NJIT and then smashing that mark with a school-record nine triples two days later against Binghamton. The nine 3-pointers made also establishes a new Patriot League record for field goals made from long range. The junior guard scored 22 points against the Highlanders and then put up a career-high 29 against the Bearcats in two wins for the Brown and White. Her 24.5 points per game were thanks in part to a 60 percent shooting effort from the field and a 65.2 percent success rate from behind the arc (15-for-23).

Williams also put up career numbers for the Mountain Hawks, averaging 11 points and 8.5 rebounds for the week. The freshman center put up a career-high 15 points at the Prudential Center and came within two rebounds of her first double-double. She bested that rebound total by pulling down a career-best nine boards on Sunday.

This is Ross’ first Patriot League Player of the Week award this season. She was named Second Team All-Patriot League in her sophomore season. For Williams, it marks the second time the league has awarded her as the top rookie of the week.
