Mountain Hawks face road test at Villanova Sunday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Mountain Hawks will match up with a Big East team for the second time this week when they travel to Villanova to take on the Wildcats today at The Pavilion. Lehigh hits the road again for its sixth road matchup in its first nine games to start the season. After dropping a 69-60 game to Syracuse on Tuesday, Lehigh will be looking to exact its revenge on fellow Big East team Villanova. The Mountain Hawks improved to 6-2 - the best start for the team since 2004-05 - with a 68-55 win over the Bryant Bulldogs Friday night at Stabler Arena.

In that game, the Mountain Hawks turned the ball over 23 times, but forced 24 turnovers out of the Bulldogs as they held on for the 13 point win. Lehigh held Bryant to just 13.0 percent shooting from behind the arc in the win. Lehigh went on a 23-4 run in the first half to put the game away early. The Mountain Hawks never trailed after taking a 2-0 lead in the first minute.

Villanova comes into the game with a 3-4 record, having earned wins against Fairfield, Penn and Central Florida. The Wildcats are looking to bounce back from a tough triple-overtime 66-57 loss to St. Joseph’s on Monday. Laura Kurz leads the Wildcats in scoring, rebounding and assists, putting up 16.9 points and pulling down 8.7 boards while making 2.6 assists per game.

Villanova has played against two teams that Lehigh has already faced this season. The Wildcats earned a win over Penn, 45-43, on Nov. 19, and they fell in triple overtime to the St. Joseph’s Hawks, 66-57 on Monday. The Mountain Hawks routed Penn on opening night at Stabler Arena, 83-52, and lost in their next matchup against St. Joseph’s, 71-63.

The Mountain Hawks and Wildcats have not met in 25 years. The last time the teams met - in the 1983-84 season - Villanova ran away with an 88-52 victory in Bethlehem. The Wildcats are one of just seven members of the current Big East Conference that the Mountain Hawks have matched up with in school history. Lehigh dropped its most recent matchup with a Big East squad, when it fell to the Syracuse Orange, 69-60 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse Tuesday night.
