BETHLEHEM, Pa – The Mountain Hawks return to the hardwood at Stabler Arena Friday night when they host the Bryant Bulldogs at 7 p.m. Lehigh is looking to bounce back from a 69-60 loss to the Syracuse Orange Tuesday night that snapped the Brown and White’s four-game winning streak.
Despite the setback, the Mountain Hawks are off to their best start (5-2) since 2004-05 and have outscored opponents by an average of 13.1 points per game. Having already knocked off three NEC teams this season, the Mountain Hawks will be looking to continue that success against the Bulldogs, who will be joining the conference in 2012-13.
Lehigh was known more for its defense last season (fifth-best scoring defense in the nation), but this year’s Mountain Hawks team has been shooting the lights out. The Mountain Hawks rank first in the Patriot League in scoring (74,0 PPG), field goal percentage (.463), three-point field goal percentage (.463) and free-throw percentage (.739).
The Mountain Hawks are not just at the top of the Patriot League in shooting, they are also in the top 10 nationally in two shooting categories. As of Nov. 30, the Brown and White ranked eighth in field goal percentage and ninth in three-point percentage.
The Mountain Hawks and Bulldogs have never met in school history. Currently the Bulldogs are classified as an Independent team in their first year of re-classification to Division I. They are not affiliated with a conference for the 2008-09 season as they make the transition from Division II to Division I. Bryant will play every team in the Northeast Conference this year. Beginning next season, the Bulldogs will play a full conference slate even though they will not officially count in the conference standings until 2012-13.
Bryant is off to a good start in its transition to Division I women’s basketball. The Bulldogs opened the season with a win over
