Lehigh to wrap up road trip at Sacred Heart

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh concludes its four-game road trip with a mid-week matchup against the Sacred Heart Pioneers Tuesday in Fairfield, Conn. The Mountain Hawks have fared well on the road swing, winning two of the three games, including convincing victories over NEC foes Fairleigh Dickinson and St. Francis (Pa.). In those last two wins, the Mountian Hawks jumped out to fast starts, averaging 56 points in the first half while holding opponents to an average of just 25 points.

The Pioneers are coming off a heartbreaking 59-58 loss in overtime at Fairfield. Sacred Heart held a two point lead until Stephanie Geehan’s three-pointer with one second left gave the Pioneers their third-straight loss to start the season. The Pioneers have played a difficult early schedule, traveling to Kansas, Marquette and Fairfield to start the season. Sacred Heart was picked to finish third in the NEC preseason poll and brings back two preseason All-NEC players in Kaitlin Sowinski and Stephanie Ryan.

The Mountain Hawks and Pioneers have met five times in history, with Lehigh owning a 3-2 advantage in the overall series. The teams met in four-consecutive seasons from 1998-2001 before going six seasons between meetings until last year. The Mountain Hawks have won the last two meetings, with the most recent victory coming last season in a 63-53 win at Stabler Arena. Four players scored in double digits in the win for the Brown and White, with Melissa Rich putting up a career-high 17 points.

In that game, the Mountain Hawks edged out Sacred Heart 63-53 at Stabler Arena, led by four players in double digits. Melissa Rich and Kaela Pearce each had a team-high 17 points, both setting career highs. Erica Prosser and Tricia Smith added 11 points each and Prosser tied her career high with six assists in the win. The Mountain Hawks hit 52.2 percent of their shots in the second half and ended the game with a .449 shooting percentage overall. Alisa Apo led all scorers with 20 points for Sacred Heart in the losing effort.
