The Lehigh women’s basketball program held its third annual Elite Camp from June 20-22. Nearly 60 campers from high schools across the country were in attendance, some of which were high-priority players being recruited by the university.
“I thought it was a great opportunity for some of our top prospects to get to know our program and the players within our program,” said head coach Sue Troyan. “The talent pool was very good. It was a very competitive camp and I think coming out of it, some of our top kids were really exposed to what our program is all about.”
The staff consisted of all of the program’s coaches, including the new graduate assistant, Gretchen Gregg, who recently graduated from
The camp began Friday night with a rush. The campers were nervous, not knowing what to expect, yet fully aware of the opportunity to make an impression. For two hours, the coaches and players demonstrated drills that are conducted daily during practices throughout the year, including continuous lay-ups, 11-man fast break and 3-line shooting, just to name a few. “I think our Elite Camp went really well,” said assistant coach Lauren Hall-Gregory. “I think we do something really unique here at Lehigh that exposes young student-athletes to what it’ll be like on Lehigh’s campus, and they really get a taste of what it’s like to be a part of our family, which is ideally what you want in a university.”
The next two days consisted of multiple two-to-three hour sessions in which more concepts such as defensive shell and offensive sets were introduced and reviewed. Campers were further divided into teams that were coached by current players. Three-on-three, one-on-one and other competitions also took place.
“We were real pleased. We don’t look for big numbers. We really look for quality versus quantity in that camp and we were real pleased with both the number of kids we had and the level of talent that was there,” Troyan said.
By Sunday afternoon, the campers were exhausted. I only played pick-up with the campers and my legs were killing me by the end of the weekend. I found it hard to imagine how these girls felt. The Elite Camp truly gave campers a taste of what is expected at Lehigh, the level we play at and the comradeship amongst our teammates. But furthermore, it gave them a glimpse of college basketball at Lehigh and something to strive for.
