What can a Lehigh education offer to its students? The opportunity to travel overseas, to work with the best and brightest in a given field, to discover places and people others can only dream of? Skills learned at Lehigh provide students with opportunities to not only succeed after graduation, but to continue their learning process no matter where life may lead them. Lehigh Athletics recently caught up with former women’s basketball standout Anne Tierney ’03 to find out what she’s up to in a new segment called ‘Where are they now?’
While at Lehigh, Anne Tierney trained to be the best student-athlete possible on and off the basketball court. In 2003, Tierney graduated as Lehigh’s all-time scoring and rebounding leader. She was a four-time First-Team All Patriot League selection, a two-time captain for the Brown and White, and was named Lehigh Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2002-2003.
Five years after graduation, Tierney helps run a business called Innovative Body Solutions to help other athletes achieve the same level of success. Tierney and her partner, Steven Sierra, use a unique training regiment to help people ranging from severely injured individuals to professional athletes.
Tierney feels very strongly about their innovative training methods based on “resistance flexibility and strength training”. She believes these methods can help athletes achieve peak performance and reduce injury.
At the time of the interview, Tierney was in
“For the most part, we train professional and Olympic athletes, as well as other trainers across the country,” Tierney said. “I train some NBA players, some NFL players, and Olympic athletes. I also worked with Al Roker on ‘The Today Show’ on a segment about getting in shape.”
Besides being an outstanding basketball player, Tierney also excelled in the classroom while attending Lehigh. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a double major in economics and finance, before getting her master’s degree in economics. Tierney credits her post-college success to Lehigh’s academic and athletic programs.
“Lehigh prepared me well for the real world because the teachers were fabulous and being part of an athletics program was helpful,” Tierney said. “I got to meet people and learn how the athletics program really worked, which was really great. I always had a love for sports economics and I have gotten to use my experiences at Lehigh in the work that I do now.”
Tierney enjoyed her time at Lehigh immensely, especially attending football games and traveling with her teammates. In fact, she said that if she had it to do over again, she would have played a second sport for the Mountain Hawks in addition to basketball.
“There is nothing in the world like playing a collegiate sport,” Tierney said. “I have done a lot of things in my life, but nothing, in my mind, compares to my experience playing basketball at Lehigh.”
Tierney urges current student-athletes to stay involved and cherish their experiences at the university.
“I would advise Lehigh athletes to take advantage of the education and the opportunity that is being presented to them,” Tierney said. “To compete at that level while getting a great education is a phenomenal combination. I would just tell student-athletes to take advantage of the opportunities while they are there and enjoy every experience.”
Tierney enjoys her work at Innovative Body Solutions and sees herself working there for the foreseeable future.
“I like to live one day at a time,” Tierney said. “I have the opportunity to work with really amazing people and I have had a lot of really amazing life experiences already. I have learned that you need to do what you love and have fun doing it, and everything else will fall into place from there.”
