ALLENTOWN, Pa. - In the opening weekend of the fall racing season, Lehigh University’s Steiner/ Sternberg Boathouse hosted the first annual Brown and White Scrimmage. The picturesque morning began with the beloved train bridge-to-flagpole 1700 meter sprints.  First the women sent out four even eights and a four which were followed by five even men’s eights.  After completing leg one of the three part event, all rowers switched their sides with their pair partner and returned to the venue’s well establish starting line. In the second race of the morning, the men struggled to find their rhythm while rowing on their opposite side. However, interestingly, four of the five women’s boats managed to find extra speed despite the fact that they had switched.

To close out the event, the men and women combined forces according to their geographic regions and set out to prove the valor of their homelands.  Knowing well that only one part of the world could be truly declared the fastest, nine eights retuned one final time to the top of the course. After the race, officials gathered to make sue that all regatta rules were followed and the winners were announced.

The bronze medal region was New England who was edged out narrowly by the second place region, Northern New Jersey. The Grand Regional Champions was Southern New Jersey.

The scrimmage provided all of the athletes who were new to the head race style an excellent opportunity to work out their jitters before their first official appearance at the Schuylkill River’s Navy Day Regatta.
