BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lee Family head coach Paul Savell has accepted a position at Drexel University to become the Director of Rowing, it was announced on Thursday. Savell leaves Lehigh after serving as the program’s head coach for the past nine years, including the last four as the first-ever full-time head coach. During his tenure he grew the program from a team of thirty to one that is more than one hundred strong today. Savell also guided the transition of the women’s program from club-varsity to varsity and he helped build a highly competitive men’s club team.
While at Lehigh, Savell led the Mountain Hawks varsity eight boat to a first place finish at the prestigious Head of the Charles in 2002, while in 2001, Lehigh placed four boats in the finals at the Dad Vail Regatta. Savell came to Lehigh after serving as a math teacher and head coach at his alma mater,
“Paul Savell did an outstanding job with our Crew program and we are deeply indebted to him,” Lehigh Goodman Dean of Athletics Joe Sterrett explained. “I know this was a difficult decision for him to make but appreciate that this move is a good one for Paul and his family. Fortunately, our program is in solid shape and we are excited about the future of rowing at Lehigh."
Lehigh has begun a national search for new coach immediately.
