The eighth annual Lehigh Crew banquet was held on March 4 at Iacocca Hall on Lehigh’s Mountaintop Campus. The reception hosted nearly 250 people during which dinner, an auction and a reception honoring many of the program’s athletes took place.
After dinner, head coach Paul Savell began the reception by thanking the many individuals responsible for keeping the crew team going strong. Coach Savell honored the families who donated to the Crew team over the years as well as the coaching staff. Later in the evening novice and varsity captains presented coaches Liz Meltzer, Greg Close, Brady Garrity, Cara Skola and longtime assistant Jason Moorehead with gifts in appreciation for their efforts and teaching. The executive board of the crew team was also recognized for their contributions and recognition of all the hard work that they have put in throughout the past year.
Assistant coaches then took the time to introduce the novice and varsity men’s and women’s teams to the parents, friends and alumni in attendance. For the athletes that so committed themselves to the sport of rowing and missed fewer than three practices that year Coach Savell presents the “Iron-Hawk Award” as recognition. This year thirteen athletes did this for the first time, five rowers did it for the second consecutive year, and four rowers for their third straight year.
Senior rowers were then presented with the “Senior Award” for their dedication to the team. Adam Haskin, Jin Hong, Lauren Richter, Kristina Nied, Jim Benton, Sarah Brams-Miller, Pam Lee, Matt Galuska, John Winter, and David Highhill all received this award. The long running tradition of awarding alumni members of the crew team who rowed all four years capped the recognition portion of the ceremony. The “Four Year Rower” award was presented to Joshua Brickman, Matthew Kampner, Kurt Lesker, Sabrina Slater, Cara Skola, and Megan Vasta.
Senior captain, president, and head coxswain David Highhill concluded the ceremony by delivering the president’s message and spoke of the hard work necessary for a rower to be successful. Said Highhill, “The internal dedication and practice necessary to produce the external result” are what make the art of rowing so difficult to achieve.”
