BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing program is set for a busy weekend as the Mountain Hawks will host the River Cup on Saturday, April 18 at the Steiner/Steinberg Boathouse in Allentown. Lehigh will compete against archrival Lafayette, as well as in-state foes Penn State and Franklin & Marshall on the Lehigh River in Allentown. Later that evening, the program will host its annual banquet at Saucon Valley Acres.
On the men’s side, Lehigh will have crews competing in the varsity 4, freshmen 4, freshmen 8, and varsity 8, while on the women’s side six crews will be racing, including the freshmen 8, junior varsity 8, freshmen 4, lightweight 8, lightweight 4, and varsity 8.
“We’re looking forward to what we hope is a very enjoyable weekend,” Lehigh head coach Liz Meltzer said. “The River Cup is sure to feature plenty of competitive races with Lafayette, Penn State and Franklin & Marshall and we’re excited that a large number of our alumni will be racing that day as well.”
She concluded, “To finish the day off with our banquet, which offers us the opportunity to visit with former student-athletes, as well as parents and friends of the program, makes the entire weekend something we’re excited about.”
At last year’s River Cup, Lehigh’s men’s and women’s varsity 8 boats won their respective races, as did the women’s lightweight eight and freshmen eight, along with the men’s varsity four, lightweight four and freshmen eight.
At last week’s Knecht Cup the Mountain Hawks saw a pair of crews earn first place finishes in their respective petite finals as the men’s varsity 8 and second varsity 8 both crossed first in their races. The women’s second varsity 8 placed third in the petite final and the women’s varsity 8 crossed in third in the third level final.
The first race on Saturday is set for 9:30 AM, with the final race set to launch at 1:15 PM. The Steiner/Steinberg Boathouse is located at 6 Pump Place in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
